In my 36 years of life, it took me a long time to truly understand the fascination with collecting something. I watched my brothers growing up collecting baseball and football cards, my mother collecting antiques off of eBay in the late 90's / early 2000s. I've watched people collect plates, shot glasses, comic books, sports memorabilia, trading cards, and so many other things... I never really understood it.
That is, until I purchased my first print.
On my second visit to the Fine Print Fair at the Cleveland Museum of Art, I sat contemplating with my partner about what I would consider to be my first major purchase in the art world. As Prime Fall by Katsunori Hamanishi was being packaged up, a man who was friends with the gallery owner and had been hovering nearby said to me, "Once you buy your first one, you'll become obsessed." And he was right. It wasn't that I didn't understand people who "collected" things, I just didn't understand why they were collecting THOSE things. But now, it all made sense. I had found what I loved.
In my search for galleries around the world, I came across a number of blogs where people posted their prints and talked about them. Some I e-mailed on the side to let them know of my appreciation for what they have collected. I had shared my own collection via Instagram and Facebook stories, but those disappear after 24 hours, and very few of those in my circle had the same appreciation for them as I did. I also had run out of wall space, so I needed a way to display my ever growing collection.
So, why not a website?
I wanted to build this site as an intersection of worlds that I know and love. I grew up with a passion for technology and web design, but I never got to use it past a few college assignments. I dabbled off and on with design and programming, and I figured this could be a way to bring that to life. While the design of the site is mostly a template I heavily modified, the underpinnings to make the site dynamic were all developed by moi.
So, this site is a way for me to share with the world what I have collected so far, and what I will continue to collect. I am not an expert in the field by any stretch, but I am doing my best to learn a little more each day, exploring new artists, finding rarities, and just spreading a little more joy in the world.
Aside from collecting prints (which has become a very expensive hobby), I like to spend my time working on game development. I also try to travel internationally at least once a year to see the world and experience different cultures, finding new art to appreciate. With my trip to Japan last September/October, it may become a regular place for me to go back to.
